Ikea is considered by many to be a healthy home brand. They were one of the first major companies to move to LED lightbulbs, they use mostly organic cotton on their products, and they sell (rather good) sustainable salmon, just to name a few things.
Now Ikea is get into air quality products with the Förnuftig air purifier.
Ikea Fornuftig Basics
The Fornuftig is an air purified that can be free-standing or wall-mounted. It is powered by an internal fan and works with two filter types, like the the Coway Mighty air purifier. The Fornuftig can use both filters at the same time, but both are not included. One is a particle filter and the other a gas/odor filter which is made of activated charcoal. Each filter is designed to last 6 months.
The particle filter is designed to be effective against dust, pet dander, smoke, pollen and other air contaminants. It is designed to absorb 99.5% of harmful 2.5µm contaminants in the air (known as PM2.5). The particle filter sells for just $5.49 which is incredibly cheap for an air purifier filter. (For reference, the Coway Mighty filter sells for about $50).
The gas filter will work on formaldehyde and cooking smells, but also smoke, according to Ikea. The gas filter is not included and has to be purchased separately, but it’s only $10.
The purifier includes a metal stand which can be removed to hang it either vertically or horizontally on a wall. It has to be plugged to operate, so nearby outlet is necessary.
The purifier has a knob that turns it off or sets it to low, medium, or high fan speeds. There is also a change filter LED indicator. There is no remote control for the Fornuftig.
The lowest and quietest setting is the sleep mode, which will minimize fan noise. The filter operates between 28 dB and 60 dB of sound level, depending on the fan speed.
Ikea Fornuftig Price And Availability
The Fornuftig went on sale on April 1st, 2021 in the United State. It is sold through Ikea stores and sells for $54.99.
The air purifier is also sold through Ikea.com but right now Ikea is charging at least $49 to ship the item based on our testing, so in-store pickup will be the best option for most buyers.
Ikea Fornuftig Room Size
The purifier is designed to work with rooms from 85 to 105 square feet, which means it’s ideal for bedrooms and offices. The largest room size you could use with the purifier and still be effective is would be about 10 feet by 10 feet, assuming a standard height (not, say, 14 foot ceilings).
Ikea Fornuftig Dimensions
This is a small air purifier that measures 18 inches tall, 12 inches wide, and 4 inches deep. The unit weighs 6.7 pounds.
Ikea Fornuftig CADR
The CADR, or clean air delivery rate with both filters installed:
- Minimum Fan Speed: 14.7 CFM
- Maximum fan speed: 70 CFM
This number is rather low, which is why the purifier is designed to work only with smaller rooms. For reference the Coway Mighty AP-1512HH has a CADR of 246 CFM. The low CADR number isn’t good or bad, so long you use the purifier is a small room, as was the intention of its designers.
Ikea Fornuftig Power Usage
The purifier uses up to 14W of power at its maximum setting with both filters installed.
