If you are looking to replace your mattress, you should consider an organic one. We spend so much time in our bed — something like a third of our lives — that it should be a healthy, comfortable, restful place. This starts with a good mattress.
Background
Recently I needed a few new mattresses and one of the brands that had come up in my research as well as been recommended by friends was Brentwood Home. The particular model that had been recommended given my search of a nicer, organic mattress was the Oceano Luxury Hybrid mattress. Prior to this I had mainly been considering an Avocado mattress (which I also purchased), as well as Awara and Saatva (to name a few).
I ended up purchasing two Brentwood Home Oceano mattresses — one queen and one twin. Twin mattresses sell for about $999 and the queen is about $1499. Discount codes and sale are frequently available to you will never really have to pay retail.
You can check for discounts at Brentwood Home’s Sales page.
Brentwood Home Oceano Sleeping And Comfort
Having owned the Oceano in twin and queen size and having used it for many nights, I can say that I really like this mattress. I’ve owned multiple mail-order mattresses as well as multiple traditional brands (Sealy, etc) and this is one of my favorites.
This mattress is on the softer side and, at first, it feels a little mushy. I was quite concerned by this as while I’m fine with a softer mattress — I’ve learned this often equates to better support — this was even softer than I expected. After a few nights of use I found that this didn’t bother me and the mattress is both comfortable and supportive.
I didn’t find that the mattress made me feel too warm, in fact the cooling seems to be quite effective. I have never felt that this mattress made me feel sweaty or uncomfortable.
Ultimately I have very little negative to say about this mattress. It’s comfortable and it’s held up well. I’ve talked to at least 4 other people who have used the Oceano (mostly guests of mine) and they have been happy as well. No one claimed it was the best mattress they have ever used, but there were no complaints at all — which is a win in my book. And this includes one older person with a bad back and a history of being picky with mattresses (and who swore they could never use a mail-order mattress).
To me this mattress seems like a very good choice for side and back sleepers, but too soft for stomach sleepers.
One complaint I have with the mattress is that it’s especially soft at the ends so getting up from the mattress can be harder than normal. People with difficulty standing from a low position should use this mattress with a taller bed frame.
When sleeping on the bed next to someone else, there seems to be very little transfer of movement from one side of the bed to the next. Getting up early or getting into bd late will be of minimal distraction to your sleeping partner despite the hybrid mattress design, which can sometime cause increased disruption from one person to the next.
Despite having springs inside the Oceano, the mattress does not creak or make any noises. These springs are very lightweight and they are individually wrapped so they do not squeak or creak.
Oceano Design
This is a good looking mattress! The vast majority of the time it’ll be under sheets, but just looking at this mattress let’s you know it’s a high-end, luxury model. Features include:
- Dual-color design with handsome blue topper
- Two carrying handles on each side
- Embroidered logo at the foot
- Fluffy, tuffed buttons on the top
One important thing to note is that this mattress is quite tall! For example, the 14-inch height means that it was bordering on too tall to fit my child’s Oeuf River twin bed frame.
Brentwood Home Oceano Basics
The Brentwood Oceano is a hybrid mattress (meaning you are supported by foam and springs), that is designed for use by all types of sleepers (top, side, and back). This is a “medium-soft” mattress which is softer than average, but not mushy or unsupportive.
The primary material of the Oceano’s top material is certified organic cotton and certified organic wool. Below the top layer is natural “BioFoam” made of plant-based materials, and below that are two layers of coil springs. The top cover is made of TenCel, a type of lyocell, which is a type of rayon, which is a fabric made of plant-based cellulose.
TenCel is USDA-certified as being BioPreferred, which means it’s green-friendly in addition to being healthy. The wool used in the mattress is certified as organic by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). There is also BioFoam, a plant-based material that is used to make CertiPUR-US, the memory foam in the mattress.
And then the heart of the mattress is (up to) 1722 “Comfort Coils” which are real, metal coil springs, just like in an old fashioned, non-foam mattress. The spring counts are as follows…
- Twin: 798
- Twin XL: 861
- Full: 1102
- Queen: 1353
- King: 1722
- Cal King: 1702
- Split King: 1722
And things don’t stop there, the Oceano also has up to 975 support coil springs, a GOTS-certified organic cotton base, and CertiPUR-US certified organic Air Luxe foam for cool, pressure-point relief.

What’s all this mean? There is more to this mattress than meets the eye.. and this is not just another foam mattress.

Mattress Shipping and Delivery
Brentwood Home features free standard shipping in about 2 weeks time to the continental United States. In my experience shipping took under 2 weeks for both mattresses and each was delivered to my door by a Fedex driver with a handcart.
With each delivery the box was well worn through the delivery process, even tattered in places, but the mattress inside was completely safe as it is kept in a heavy duty plastic bag and then vacuum shrunk. Brentwood includes a small tool for safely opening the mattress bag, which will prevent you accidentally cutting your new mattresses with a pair of scissors.
At this point the mattress will inflate and you can discard the plastic. The mattress is ready within a few minutes of removing it from the plastic, though I made sure to give mine a day to off-gas. This wasn’t noted or recommended by Brentwood, but it seemed logical to do so.
I did not opt for the white glove delivery, which would have placed the mattress in my room and on the bed frame, as I was able to do this myself. This service costs $249 and removal of an old mattress would cost another $275, making each a very expensive optional and something can you do for less through a local contact.
Brentwood Home Mattress Return Policy
I have not returned a Brentwood mattress yet and, honestly, I don’t plan on doing so, but if you don’t opt to keep your mattress there is a generous (and competitive) return policy.
You can return your mattress after 30 days of use and before 1 year of receiving it. Return shipping is free and you don’t need to keep the box.
It is important to note that each household can only return one mattress! So if you buy three mattresses at one your at-home 1-year trial will only work on one of them!
FAQs
How do I return a Brentwood Home mattress?
To make a return you must have had the mattress over 30 days and under 365 days. The return is started by contacting Brentwood and registering your return. The company will then setup a pickup of the mattress by a local partner. You must be the original purchaser of the mattress and it must have been purchased directly from Brentwood for the return to be accepted.
Is the Brentwood Home Oceano a good mattress for side sleepers?
Yes. The soft design, pressure point relief, and graduated softness (firmer at the top and softer at the bottom) is ideal for side sleepers.
