If you are buying a higher end, higher capacity portable workbench, then you are likely considering the Black & Decker WM425. But then when you go to do your order, you might notice that the model is actually the WM425-A. What’s the difference?
Background
I need of a portable workbench I recently purchased a WM425 from Amazon. Upon arrival the instructions clearly stated “WM425” but after reviewing the box and then the Amazon.com page, I noticed that I had actually purchased something called the “WM425-A.”
This left me with two questions, did I get the workbench that I wanted, and what’s the difference between the two?
The answer to the first question is, “yes” as the two models seem to have no discernible differences between them.
Upon doing research and going through multiple assembly manuals, the two models seem to be identical. In fact, my WM425-A shipped with a WM425 manual, which seems to be a clear indicator that they are interchangeable.
In online comment threads a number of people noted that the difference is simply that the WM425 is the model that is sold in stores where the WM425-A is the model that is shipped from online retailers. This is actually the most logical explanation as the two model names are used interchangeably except for by online retailers who quite clear about selling the “WM425-A” when they list the product ID.
Type 5, Type 6, Etc.
Upon a deeper inspection of the assembly manual, I also learned that the WM425 has a “Type” identifier as well. My model seems to be Type 6, but a Type 5 (and presumably 1, 2 and 3 also exist.
As far as the Type goes, my understanding is that over the generations of this product the specifications and functions haven’t changed, but some of the designs of the parts have changed. These tiny changes won’t affect the end user, but would make a difference if you needed to replace a part of the WM425. These small changes are reflected in a new Type number.
Once the new Type is released, the old type is no longer available for sale, but Black+Decker should still be able to get you replacement parts.
Other WM425 FAQs
Does B+D sell casters for the WM425?
No, casters (rolling wheels) are not sold for the WM425. If you want to add them you’ll have to build your own rolling dolly and then place the WM425 on top of it. The WM425 is quite large so this will require a significant size platform, but it is possible.
Does the WM425 ship assembled or is assembly required?
The WM425 and WM425-A are not assembled when you receive them. Check out our WM425 assembly video to see how to build it.
What tools are required to build the WM425 workbench?
Technically the only tool that is required (aside from the included socket wrench) is a hammer. We’d recommend a pair of scissors, a channel lock (or similar), and perhaps a proper socket wrench set to use instead of the small plastic one that comes with the WM425.
How much does the WM425 workbench weigh?
This portable workbench is on the larger size and weighs 39.6 pounds (17.96 kg).
What are the dimensions of the WM425 workbench when it’s expanded and ready for work?
The WM425 is 29 inches by 9 inches by 29.5 inches when opened and standing. The total work surface on the bamboo top is 29 inches by 20.5 inches.
Can you a mount a miter saw or similar tool on the WM425?
Black+Decker does not recommend placing a miter saw on the WM425, but many people do it anyway as the weight capacity is sufficient and the bench can clamp the saw, router, etc. securely using the included bench dogs. We’d recommend against this and instead using a workbench specifically designed to hold your saw.
Are replacement parts available for the WM425?
Yes, some of the parts can be replaced. These include the rubber feet, the drive belt that opens and closes the vice, the bench dogs, and the leg catches which hold the legs open/closed.
Does Black+Decker sell replacement wood pieces for the WM425?
No, you cannot purchase replacement pieces for the bamboo wood top of the WM425. If you have damaged or lost these pieces you’ll need to contact Black+Decker support and see if they can be replaced using their RMA or repair program.
