Is it time to mulch your garden beds? This is something many homeowners like to do every year in order to make your property look great by deterring weeds and keeping the beds looking tidy.
But how should that mulch get your home?
How Much Mulch To Buy?
Figuring out how much mulch you need is fairly straightforward — they key is the number 324.
This is the case because 1 cubic yard of mulch covers a 324 square feet area with a depth of 1-inch. So if you want a generous, weed-blocking 3-inch depth you can figure 108 square feet per yard. That’s about a yard per 11-foot by 11-foot patch. and 3 inches.
Honestly 3 inches deep is a lot so you can get buy with 2, despite what some sources might recommend.
Mulch Delivery Or By Buy The Bag?
Once you know how much to buy, the question is how do you get it to your home. If you have a pickup and a township that offers free mulch then that’s the killer combination, but if you are lacking a truck then there is going to be some math involved.
Buying mulch by the bag tends to be expensive but delivery fees can be quite expensive as well.
Standard mulch, which for most areas of the United States is black cedar mulch can range from $3.50 a bag to up to $6.50, depending on where you live and if you are shopping at Home Depot or Lowes (which will be cheap) or Agway or Ace Hardware (etc.) which will be expensive.
This calculator should help you decide whether it makes more sense to buy your mulch by the bag and haul it yourself or just have it delivered.
