There are very few tools as useful and as satisfying to own as a good pair of scissors. I’ve tested a lot of scissors and I take my cutting quite seriously. Here are my favorites scissors as well as some you should avoid.
The Best Scissors For Home
There are so many good scissors sold in 2020 that we’ll have to divide them up into sub-categories in order to get a handle on all the types.
Best Value Scissors
These are sub-$10 scissors that are great a their job.

Scotch Precision Scissor, 8-Inch
3M’s Scotch brand might be known for its tape, but they make great scissors as well. The thing is, the scissors sell at an incredible price: just about $5 for an 8-inch pair.
I bought these in order to keep in my junk drawer for all my non-food tasks (opening packages, cutting twine, etc.) and I’m quite happy with them.
Despite the low price these scissors have a comfort grip, stainless steel blades, and a smooth action. They are precise enough for fabric but really best suited for general use. They even have a limited lifetime warranty.
Bonus feature usually only found in high-end scissors: The screw that holds the two pieces together is adjustable so you can make the scissor cutting action tighter or looser, depending on your preferences.
For me these 3M Scotch scissors were a fantastic find.
Fiskars The Original Orange Handled Scissors, 8-Inch
The original Fiskars scissors are a true hall-of-fame choice in the world of scissors. These are the household scissors, and have been since 1967! Just how popular are they? Fiskars has sold over a billion pairs!
One import note about these scissors is that they are right-hand specific!
Best Left-handed Scissors
Some of us are left-handed, which means that lefty scissors are a better fit for us. For lefties, you’ll either want left-hand-specific scissors or universal scissors which are not hand specific and it the same from both directions. We’ll look at left-hand specific ones here.

Fiskars Left-hand Scissors, 8-inch
These scissors are the lefty version of the famous Fiskars Orange scissors mentioned above. These are red so you don’t confuse them with your orange, right-hand specific ones.
Best Luxury Scissors
Pallares Solsona Kitchen Scissors, 8-inch
The wonderfully heavy duty Pallares Solsona scissors (pictured at the top) are made from a heritage brand in Spain and they are one of the nicest, coolest things I own. These stainless steel kitchen scissors are classically styled and are one of those things you use and think, “the don’t make things like this any more…”
I originally bought them in the 9-inch size and I like them so much that I also bought them in 8-inch, which I actually prefer. The 8-inch ones are just easier to maneuver if you have small- to average-sized hands where the 9-inch ones are quite big and surprisingly heavy. They are also quite expensive, with the larger size selling for over $100.
There are many more great scissors out there, which I’ll add to this page over time! So bookmark and check back in.
